The Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham is exploring the possibility of getting a new group established in Chichester. On Saturday 3 May, at 4.15 pm, Solemn Mass was celebrated in St Richard's Catholic Church in the city, with Fr Graham Smith of the Ordinariate presiding and Mgr Robert Mercer of the Isle of Wight and Portsmouth Group deaconing. The Mass, the first of Sunday, was celebrated according to the Ordinariate Use which integrates centuries' old prayers into the Roman Rite.
Fr Smith, who is based at St Richard's said: "It was a very happy occasion and in terms of numbers, more successful than we had anticipated. About fifty people came, around half of them Ordinariate members and half Diocesan Catholics who wanted to support us". The plan is for the Ordinariate Mass to take place every Saturday, normally according to the Ordinariate Use. "It is a missionary exercise", said Fr Smith. "The distance between the Ordinariate groups in this region are quite big, so we want to see whether, with the support of Mgr Mercer and folk from Portsmouth and Fr Neil Chatfield from the Eastbourne Group, we can 'grow' a new group in Chichester".
All are welcome to the Ordinariate Masses, at 4.15pm on Saturdays at St Richard's Catholic Church Cawley Road, Chichester PO19 1XB.
