Ordinariate priest's Mass to be performed at festival
Ordinariate members from across the country who will be in London for the Ordinariate's festival on Saturday 20 September this year, will get a chance to hear a new Mass setting, composed by the parish priest of the Ordinariate's central church in Warwick Street, when the Mass is performed on Sunday 21 September as part of the weekend of celebrations for the festival.
Approval has also been given from Rome for Fr Mark Elliott Smith's Mass, which will be published over the summer by Decani Music, to be dedicated to Pope Emeritus Benedict. Fr Elliott Smith said: It is a great honour to be able to give something back, however small, to the Pope Emeritus after the great gift he gave us with the establishment of the Ordinariate, enabling us to bring something of what we are, into the full commuunion of the Catholic Church. I am also delighted that the Mass of St Gregory will be performed at the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption and St Gregory, in Warwick Street over the festival weekend".
The festival is expected to be the biggest gathering of clergy and faithful from the more than 40 Ordinariate groups across the country, since the Ordinariate was established in the UK in January 2011.
The celebrations begin on the evening of Friday 19 September with a reception in London for members of the Ordinariate and friends, by kind invitation of the Ordinary, Mgr Keith Newton. The journalist and broadcaster, Dr William Oddie - formerly an Anglican priest - will be the guest speaker. The main events of the festival are the following day, Saturday, 20 September, organised around Mass in Westminster Cathedral at 12.30.
Before the Mass, Ordinariate groups will give presentations on aspects of their mission. In the afternoon Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster and President of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales, will speak. There will then be an address by the Ordinary, Mgr Keith Newton.
That evening, at 7.00 pm, there will be a reception at the Church of the Most precious Blood, Borough, London, which is in the care of the Ordinariate. The reception will be hosted by the Ladies Ordinariate Group (LOGS).
The Mass at Warwick Street will be at on Sunday 21 September at 10.30 am.
