Statue of Our Lady of Walsingham to be commissioned
Monday 2nd March 2015

The Ordinariate Group in south Wales are to commission a statue of Our Lady of Walsingham to adorn the altar of their chapel in St David's Cathedral, Cardiff.

As Fr Bernard Sixtus, the group pastor, explained, "the statue is to be made especially for our reredos rather than us buying something 'off the shelf'. It is to be hand-carved in lindenwood, with polychrome colouring including gold leaf, by Mr Josef Albl of Oberammergau (Bavaria) - see his website www.albl-oberammergau.com for examples of his work. While this means we will have to continue 'saving up' for a while longer, it will ensure we have a statue worthy of the rererdos and altar already in place. We currently have just under half of the funds needed in our account or pledged in donations and grants."

The chapel was created out of a recess to the right of the Cathedral sanctuary, with a reredos provided by the Cathedral. Canon Peter Collins, the Cathedral Dean who was responsible for setting up the chapel, said that the Archdiocese was keen to see the Ordinariate group in Wales flourish. "It makes a great contribution to the life of the Catholic Church. It also has a valuable contribution to make in supporting the decision-making of a number of Anglicans in the area who are contemplating their future at present", he said.

The photograph shows Canon Peter Collins with Fr Bernard Sixtus standing beside the altar. The side alcoves of the reredos contain icons of the Archangels Gabriel and Raphael, which were bought by the group last November, and the gap in the centre is where the statue of Our Lady of Walsingham will be positioned..
